Housing Estates Competition
Background Information
In 2009 a team of judges will select a 1st, 2nd & 3rd overall winners in the County. There will also be various judges awards for different Housing Estates in county Meath.
Judging Criteria 2009
For added variety this year we have a new set of judging criteria.
1. Overall Impression 20 marks
- Overall plan for the area, exploring themes of wildlife areas, play areas, productive areas, eg. growth of willows, vegetables, fruit etc
- Cleanliness of the area
- Interpretation and integration with local surroundings
- Appearance of green areas, Spaces and gardens/waterside areas
2. Permanent Planting and Floral Enhancement 30 marks
- Annual planting programme for all four seasons
- Diversity and variety of permanent and yearly planting including trees, plants and shrubs
- Co-ordination of colours in harmonization with local built environment/waterside environment
- Presentation of variable planting such as baskets, planters and Boxes
- Influence and impact of the planting colours used and use of features
3. Effort and Involvement 30marks
- Effort/Actions of Residents Assoc in the estate
- Co-operative efforts of all the residents, adults & children alike
- Input made by private individuals eg. stunning garden display
4. Environmental Management 20 marks
- Environmental Management - waste, water & energy
- Reduction of chemical products
- Management of water features if any
- Green Waste recovery
- Recycling facilities
Training Workshops
A practical workshop with tutors in College of Horticulture Warrenstown will take place in May on how to design, plant & manage your housing estate.
Judging:
Judging of the housing estates will take place from Monday 20th to Friday 31st July (not in August)
Prizes:
1st Prize: €500 + Trophy
2nd Prize:€250
3rd Prize:€100
Awards Ceremony
The awards ceremony will take place in October 2009.
