Results of Pride of Place 2006


Meath County Council's Pride of Place competition has now been in operation since 2004 and success has continued with this initiative, with the numbers of participants and interest in it expanding considerably. At an awards ceremony on Friday 24th November in Warrenstown College, participants in Pride of Place 2006 were treated to a synopsis of the competition so far through snapshots and an outline on what Pride of Place has meant to the various areas that have taken part over the years.

Villages with Populations up to 500: 

1st place: Moynalty
2nd place: Castletown
3rd place: Fordstown
 

Villages/Towns with Populations 500 to 1,500:

1st place: Rathmolyon
2nd place: Julianstown
3rd place: Nobber 
 

Towns with Populations over 1,500: 

1st place: Athboy
2nd place: Trim
3rd place: Dunshaughlin 
 

It is important to maintain and enhance the character and heritage of our approach roads to towns and villages as they provide the initial impression of the centre. This is evident when you visit Rathmolyon who won in this category.

Best Approach Roads: 

1st place: Ballivor Road, Rathmolyon 

It is encouraging that so many youth groups have got involved in this year's competition and have created a positive impact in their area through the work that they have done.

Best Youth Projects: 

1st place: No Name Club, Athboy
2nd place: Kells Youthreach 

It is often noted how the presence of a derelict site in an area can bring down and denigrate the facade of a locality, By getting involved in improvement projects on these sites, these groups have made a significant contribution to the enhancement of an area.

County Meath is abounding with housing estates, some of these are old and some are new. Many are filled with active residents that are enthusiastic about the places they live and want to create positive enjoyable surroundings for all. Meath County Council has rewarded the residents in the winning estates in the following categories.

Best Overall Housing Estate Awards in County Meath:

3rd Place: Meadowbank Hill, Ratoath

Ashbourne Housing Estates Awards :

Dunboyne Housing Estates Awards:

1st place: Courthill Drive

Several local groups and individuals living in close proximity to waterways in County Meath have carried out improvement and development projects in these areas which have enhanced the area. The following have received prizes in the Waterways awards. 

The Waterways Awards :

1st place: Cowpark, Athboy
2nd place: Riverwalk, Sonairte 

Harvest Walks : 

The Harvest Walk category of the competition encourages rurally based community groups in their endeavours to improve a specific part of their local area. The following groups were rewarded for their endeavours to enhance the natural beauty of a mile stretch of road in their area. 

Best New Walk: Simonstown Lane, Navan 
Best Clean Up Effort: Ratoath Heritage Group 
Best Community Spirit: Kilmainham Wood 
 
Harvest Walk Awards:

1st place: Athboy

2nd place: Broomfield and District, Lamberts Bridge
 

Best Buildings:

Best Public Building :  Navan Town Hall
 
Best Hospitality/Tourism Premises (Joint Winners) :

Best Individual Achievement: 

1st place: Sculpture "Angel of the Past" at Catherine McCAuley Centre, Kells
