Meath County Council launched its Green Dog Walkers’ initiative on Monday 17th June 2013 at a gathering of dog-owners, community groups and local residents of Garden City & Crestwood in Ashbourne. Green Dog Walkers is a Regional programme involving South Dublin County Council, DunLaoghaire-Rathdown County Council, Fingal County Council, Wicklow County Council and Meath County Council. The initiative aims to tackle the problem of dog fouling in parks, in housing estates, playgrounds, beaches and all public areas. It involves empowering local communities and groups to meet the challenges of dog fouling in a non-confrontational, friendly way. Dog owners are encouraged to sign up to a charter whereby, they agree to comply with certain criteria such as the wearing of a green armband/bag dispenser when walking their dog, cleaning up after their dog, and encouraging  others to clean up after their dog and sign up to the Charter.

The Cathaoirleach of Meath County Council, Councillor Niamh McGowan is delighted with the Council’s investment in the programme “dog owners will always talk about the pleasure of taking their pet for a nice walk and how owning a dog adds to their quality of life. However, we often see the downside of this activity with the scourge of dog fouling and the mess it leaves in our public areas. Apart from the fact that dog fouling creates an unsightly mess, we must also be conscious of the serious health issues associated it. Through the Green Dog Walkers’ programme we look forward to seeing a positive attitude among dog owners and a real commitment to tackling this problem.” she said. Meath County Council’s investment will include the supply of green merchandise—armbands and bone dog bag dispensers. A database will also be compiled of all dog owners who sign the pledge.

The programme was originally piloted in Falkirk, Scotland 4 or 5 years ago.
