Navan 2030 Plan

Navan Town Centre to be Revitalised with New Plan - ‘Navan 2030’ Plan goes to Public Consultation

On 3rd May 2017 Meath County Council launched detailed plans to revitalise and rejuvenate Navan town centre and has invited the public to comment on the proposals. The plans, which are the first phase of the Council’s ‘Navan 2030 Plan’, are designed to make Navan a better place to live, work and visit.

The plans lay out improvements and enhancements to the appearance of the town and its public areas and improved access and movement in and out of the town centre. They are designed to meet the current and future needs of an expanding population while strengthening economic growth in the town, supporting business, retail and tourism.

Meath County Council CEO Jackie Maguire commented; “Navan is at a key stage in its development. As the number of people living here grows, the town must adapt to meet their needs. These plans will deliver a new, attractive, pedestrian friendly town centre, combined with frequent and reliable public transport services. They will make for a better experience for those visiting the town centre and it will encourage more people to visit, to shop and to stay longer.”

Anne Graham, National Transport Authority Chief Executive said: “On behalf of the NTA I welcome Meath County Council’s ‘Navan 2030 Plan’, which I believe will transform the town and provide a much improved environment for pedestrians, cyclists, and public transport users. The NTA views this project as an excellent example of the positive results that be achieved when agencies work together towards a shared objective.

Key elements of the Plan include;

  • Visual enhancements to the streetscape
  • Upgrading streets, laneways and public spaces in the historic and modern areas of the town centre, with high quality pedestrian facilities and connectivity throughout
  • Greater accessibility for pedestrians, including people with disabilities, cyclists, public transport, cars and other vehicles
  • Improved access to and from public transport
  • Maximised connectivity around the town centre for pedestrians
  • Safer, multi-functional, and traffic calmed streets, that balance movement and ‘place’
  • Establishing and promoting strong pedestrian connections between the historic and modern areas; the retail/commercial quarter and the cultural quarter of Navan
  • Local and regional bus routes rationalised and integrated
  • New edge-of-town ‘Terminus’/ ‘Park & Ride’ for buses and coaches
  • Through traffic re-routed around the town centre
  • Pedestrian space increased and enhanced throughout

The multimillion Euro plans, which are being proposed by Meath County Council and supported by the National Transport Authority, will now go to a six-week public consultation, starting on May 8th 2017. With planning consent, works could begin in early 2018 and be substantially completed in 2020.

The Council will be holding a number of information days and hosting displays over the next six weeks. A publication outlining the plans will also be delivered to households shortly.
