Motor Tax for a Heavy Goods Vehicle

MOTOR TAX FOR A HEAVY GOODS VEHICLE 

Heavy goods vehicles are vehicles exceeding 3500kg Design Gross Vehicle Weight. 

You need the following for the first time taxation of your heavy goods vehicle:  

  1. Completed Application Form RF100 (If the vehicle is new you will obtain form RF100 from your garage or if the vehicle is imported you will obtain it from the National Car Testing Service – www.ncts.ie ) or Form RF100A (available at www.motortax.ie) if it is your first time taxing the vehicle upon a change of ownership to your name.
     
  2. Vehicle Insurance Details – your vehicle insurance must cover the vehicle for commercial use. 

  3. Weight Docket & Weigh Masters Certificate from an Authorised Weighbridge
    Please note that in relation to an articulated vehicle i.e. the vehicle and trailer is regarded as a single vehicle and motor tax is payable on the basis of the unladen weight of the tractor unit plus the unladen weight of the heaviest trailer which may be used at any time during the period of the vehicle licence. Please note that the Weight Docket & Weigh Masters Certificate must be in date, i.e. dated within 3 months of the receipt of a valid motor taxation application. 
    Please also note that the Licencing Authority may require a weight docket on the change of ownership of a rigid truck in its absolute discretion.

  4. The vehicle must have a current Certificate of Road Worthiness where it is one year old or more from the date it was first registered. This will automatically show on the National Vehicle & Driver File if tested since October 2013.

  5. Appropriate Fee – rates available at www.motortax.ie

You need the following to renew motor taxation on a heavy goods vehicle currently registered to you:-

  1. Completed application form, i.e. Reminder RF100B or Tax Renewal Form RF100A – available at www.motortax.ie
  2. Appropriate Fee – rates available at www.motortax.ie
  3. Vehicle Insurance details - your vehicle insurance must cover the vehicle for commercial use.
  4. The vehicle must have a current Certificate of Roadworthiness where it is one year old or more from the date it was first registered. This will automatically show on National Vehicle & Driver File if tested since October 2013

You need the following to renew motor taxation on a heavy goods vehicle currently registered to you where a re-declaration is necessary, e.g. change of unladen weight

  • Completed Change of Particulars Form RF111 –  available at www.motortax.ie
  • Appropriate Fee – rates available at www.motortax.ie
  • Vehicle Insurance Details - your vehicle insurance must cover the vehicle for commercial use.
  • Registration Book or Vehicle Registration Certificate
  • Weight Docket & Weigh Masters Certificate from an Authorised Weighbridge.
