Site to Sound - A Meath County Council Arts Office Residency

Site to Sound was a nine month Artist in Resident Project by Meath County Council Arts Office involving students from St. Joseph ’s Secondary School Navan and Nobber Friendship Club. Dramatist, Helen Blackhurst and sound artist, Slavek Kwi facilitated this process and encouraged each group to explore story-telling, site-recordings and sound-scapes inspired by local sites including bridges, green areas and changes that have happened over time.

This inter-generational project saw the Nobber Friendship club create fictional characters which expressed life in 1940’s Nobber in contrast to the present day and the students of St. Joseph ’s school composed sound-scapes in response to visits to various sites within both Navan and Nobber. Throughout the project, the two groups came together to share their process, undertaking joint site field-recordings, and creating story and sound-scapes which expressed a common sense of place and people.

The Site to Sound CD was edited, mixed and compiled by Slavek Kwi. All sounds used were recorded with and by participants. While the composition doesn’t intend to represent particular places it aims to reflect on the process of approaching the subjects while emphasising the phonetic and aesthetical qualities that these sounds carry.

Listen to Site to Sound in Solstice Arts Centre from April 27^th to May 22^nd. Listening posts are also available in Ashbourne, Nobber, Trim, Navan and Dunboyne libraries.
