About the Fire Department
Our Mission: "To take all necessary measures to ensure protection of life, property, and the environment by the efficient and effective prevention and control of fires, road fatalities, properties and analogous emergencies."
Expanding Our Services in line with Population Growth
Meath Fire & Emergency services continue to expand its services in line with the growth of population in the County. During 2011 we saw a continuation of the Council's publicity campaign on Fire Awareness in its efforts to reduce the county's exposure to fire.
The cost of operating the Fire Service is approximately €4 million annually. Challenges exist for the Council in recruitment of dedicated personnel to act as retained Fire Fighters. Staff must devote a significant amount of their time to training and call outs and must reside within a short distance of their station.
There are 71 retained firefighters and 1 full-time Station Officer throughout the county, based at 7 stations in Navan, Trim, Kells, Oldcastle, Nobber, Dunshaughlin and Ashbourne.
The Fire Service in County Meath is a retained service i.e. the Fire Stations are not manned. The number to ring in the event of an emergency is 999 or 112. The number for non-emergency calls, from 9.30 am to 5.30 pm Monday and from 9.30am to 5.00 pm Tuesday to Friday, is to 046-9051068 or 046-9021666. Please note that the offices are closed from 1pm to 2pm daily.
Regional Computer Aided Mobilisation Plan
Meath County Council subscribes to the regional computer aided mobilisation Plan which co-ordinates deployment of fire appliances. The benefits of this system are evident in areas such as East Meath which is serviced by the Drogheda based brigades .
