Disabled Persons Grant

This scheme ceased on 1 November 2007.  It was replaced with the newer "Housing Adaptation Scheme for Persons with a Disability".

Any application submitted after 1 November 2007 was initially placed on hold and subsequently sent out a "Housing Adaptation Scheme for Persons with a Disability" application form.

All new grant applications received in 2008 were processed in line with available funding, prioritised based on terminal illness, age of applicant, and urgency of works required. This Scheme is now closed for 2008/2009 as funding is exhausted.

Meath County Council is not currently accepting applications under the Housing Adaptation Scheme for Persons with a Disability.

If or when the Scheme reopens we will notifiy on this website and in local newspapers.

Housing grants are available for disabled people in situations where changes need to be made to a home to make it suitable for a person with a physical or intellectual disability or suffering from a psychiatric illness. Grant assistance may be available for changes such as making the home wheelchair-accessible, installation of a stair lift, provision of ground floor bedroom, toilet, or shower facilities etc.

Grants under the scheme are paid through the Local Authority.

Rules

There is no income limit for eligibility.  The disabled person must use the house as their normal place of residence. The maximum grant available is €20,320 or 90% of the approved cost of the works, whichever is the lesser or whatever is deemed applicable as per the Disabled Persons Grant Scheme (see below).

If you are a Local Authority tenant, the Local Authority will meet the entire cost of the works, generally up to a maximum of €20,320.  If you are an owner-occupier, up to 90% of the cost may be granted, generally up to a maximum of €20,320.

The grant will not be paid if you start work before the grant is approved.

When the Local Authority receives your application, it will refer it to the Health Services Executive who will call out and assess your circumstances.

Where a new house is being specifically provided and suitably designed to meet the needs of a disabled person the Local Authority may pay a grant to eligible applicants to a maximum of €12,700.  This grant is called a Disabled Persons New House Grant.
