Change of Name for Driving Licence

If I get married/divorced, do I need a new driving licence?

Whether or not you wish your driving licence to reflect your married or single name is a personal matter. You are not legally obliged to change your licence but you can if you wish. Your new licence will be issued free of charge in your new name for the remaining period of your existing licence.

Contact your local Motor Tax Office and they will provide you with the relevant driving licence application form.

As well as the completed form you will need to provide:

  • 2 passport sized photographs
  • Current licence
  • Original marriage certificate or passport in married name or if reverting back to maiden name submit marriage certificate

Exchanging your driving licence to amend the address or name is a free service.
