Heritage Week 2012 in County Meath

National Heritage Week 2012 will take place from Saturday 18th to Sunday 26th August and numerous organisations, local groups and individuals will be hosting events that celebrate the rich heritage of County Meath.  Events taking place include Duleek Village Fair, Slane’s Lady Well Fete, living history displays at the Battle of the Boyne Site, a guided walk on the traditions associated with St Kieran’s Well and its curative powers, free guided tours of OPW sites, Slane Heritage Village Walk, Girley Bog walk, Open Days at Victorian Waterworks, Kells and talks on Du Noyer’s Landscapes of Nineteenth Century Meath, Meath Field Names Project and Medieval Settlement and Burial Practices to mention but a few. Heritage Week is a fantastic celebration of our wonderful natural and cultural heritage and offers everyone the opportunity to get out, explore and enjoy their local area .  

Almost every day there will be something happening somewhere in Meath and, indeed, across the country.  Most of these events are free and many are suitable for children including Archaeology Fun Workshops for 7-12 year olds at the Blackfriary, Trim (August 21st) and Brú na Bóinne Visitor Centre on Tuesday (August 21st and 22nd); Art for Kids at Kells Resource Centre on August 18th and 19th; walk and children’s quiz around Navan on Sunday August 19th departing from CYWS, Fair Green, Navan at 3pm.

Trim Walled Town Festival will take place on August 19th 2012 and promises to be a great family day out organised and supported by Trim Chamber of Commerce, Meath Heritage Centre, Trim Town Council, Heritage Council  and the Heritage Office, Meath County Council.  Activities will include archery, drumming workshop, puppet shows, face painting, falconry display, pottery painting, guided walks and blacksmiths.

National Heritage Week is part of European Heritage Days, a joint initiative of the Council of Europe and the European Union.  Heritage Week is co-ordinated by the Heritage Council in conjunction with the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht with support from the Office of Public Works and Fáilte Ireland.
