Childrens Swimming Lessons

Timetable of children's swimming lessons

The staff at Kells Swimming Pool pride themselves on their commitment to teaching water confidence and swimming technique to all ages at the pool. At Kells we are fortunate to have a small shallow pool for early learners. Water temperature is kept at a comfortable 30 degrees which is a more relaxing temperature to learn in.

Coming to a swimming pool can be a daunting experience.  Having a shallow pool makes it easier for a child to learn and we introduce all our early practices here. Success at this level creates a sound basis for further learning.

In the shallow pool children are encouraged to enjoy the experience - fun and enjoyment are the key words here - of being in the water and starting from getting their faces wet, to putting their faces in the water and stretching on their tummy and on their back and finally to kicking their legs before moving off with confidence to the “big” pool.

When to move a child on from the learning pool is always a big decision and a number of factors are taken into account.

  • First and foremost is the child himself, is he confident enough to take this huge step It is very scary to find yourself in water so deep, and leave a teacher you have such confidence in.
  • Skills such as face in water, arms and legs stretched out, and floating unaided, make the transition successful.
  • Height! If a child can stand, He / she can cope with the demands being made of him/her

All the learning programmes at the pool have a structure with progression from little pool through to Deep end.

Regular monitoring during the course and assessment at the end of each course ensures that children move along at their own rate.

Water time is precious and the more practice the better. Little and often is much more productive than longer infrequent visits.

How can you help your child?

  • Before swimming your child should always use the toilet.
  • Hats and goggles should be secure. (Goggles can be a big distraction in a class)
  • It is a big help if we know of any difficulties a child may have, efforts are always made to facilitate children who need a different approach.

Please speak  to the Deck Manager or Receptionist if you have any concerns or questions, we are always happy to answer your questions
