Meath florist wins gold at Chelsea Flower Show

Jenny Murphy - RHS Chelsea Show, Gold Medal Winner & Florist of the Year 2012

A MEATH florist has floored the competition at the prestigious Chelsea Flower Show by winning Florist of the Year on her first time entering. Jenny Murphy, (32) of Dunshaughlin's Flowers by Moira, was the first Irish competitor to qualify for the world renowned competition and the first to win the acclaimed title.

She beat tough competition to design and construct an arrangement called ‘Diamonds are Forever’ – a chandelier to be hung at the Queen’s diamond jubilee dinner. Her creation in the royal colours red and purple, featured caila lilies and orchids. A clearly delighted Ms Murphy could barely contain her excitement. She told the Irish Independent: "You kind of hope, but you never expect to actually win. I'm absolutely thrilled."

The florist, who works with her mother Moira, spoke today of her joy on winning both the gold medal for floristry and being crowned Florist of the Year. “I am absolutely blown away. To not only be the first Irish contender for the Florist of the Year competition, but to win it is such an incredible feeling,” she said. “The Chelsea Flower Show is world-renowned and to have my name associated with it is something I will remember and cherish as long as I live. I’d like to thank my mum Moira for her ceaseless hard work and belief in me and encouraging me to go all the way.”  Jenny and her mother Moira have catered for celebrity Irish weddings including Michael and Niamh Flatley and Shane and Gillian Filan.

A homecoming is planned for Monday evening at 5.30pm at Dunshaughlin courthouse.
