AIB Ladies Irish Open a massive success at Killeen Castle

The Ladies Irish Open, the biggest golfing event ever to take place in Meath, attracted huge crowds last weekend at Killeen Castle.  With an estimated attendance of 35,000, Fáilte Ireland, Meath Tourism and Louth County Council were delighted with the interest from golfers in holidaying in the Boyne Valley Region.  The ladies Irish Open proved to be an excellent platform on which to showcase the Boyne Valley, its vast heritage and vibrant festival programme.

Visitors to the Boyne Valley tented village relaxed in the ‘Boyne Valley Experience Cinema’ marquee and watched many short films on the Heritage & Cultural attractions that make up the Boyne Valley as a tourist destination. The cinema was extremely popular with everybody attracting both young and old.  The most popular short films were those featuring The Battle of the Boyne site at Oldbridge, Co. Meath where re-enactments of the Battle of the Boyne in the 17th century were showcased. Also of great interest was the short film about the World Heritage site at Bru na Boinne (Newgrange).

The Boyne Valley Festival & Events stage hosted a range of local festival & event performers who entertained the thousands for the entire weekend. The acts represented many festivals from across the Boyne Valley region including Drogheda Arts Festival, Ardee Baroque Festival, Kells Market Day, Navan Live, The Trim Haymaking Festival, The National Guitar Festival and the Navan Choral Festival.  It was very obvious to all who enjoyed the entertainment that great effort had been put in by all to ensure the visitors to the Ladies Irish Open had a great weekend.

Kevin Kidney, Head of Operations of Fáilte Ireland said that “The Boyne Valley area is particularly rich in important heritage sites and combined with the proximity to Dublin means there is considerable potential to benefit from the volumes of visitors, both domestic and international, who travel through the capital.  We have been working closely with both the local providers, Festival & Events organisers and the two Local Authorities to develop the Boyne Valley as a destination and to encourage visitors to the area to stay longer than a day trip or short break”.
