Meath Tourism Strategy

Ireland’s Heritage Capital – Marketing Tourism 2005-2010

Meath aims to be in the top ten County Tourism Destinations by 2010

County Meath has set an ambitious target of getting into the top ten County Tourism Destinations by 2010.  Meath Tourism and Meath County Council commissioned a tourism strategy last year with the objective of guiding tourism development, inward investment and marketing for the county over the next five years.  Shaun Quinn, CEO Failte Ireland in October 2005 officially launched 'Irelands Heritage Capital- Marketing Tourism in Meath 2005 – 2010’, the strategy to move Co. Meath into the top ten County tourism destinations by 2010.

The strategy was prepared by Welcome Marketing and included an extensive programme of consultation and research with the tourism trade in the County, overseas industry, Tourism Ireland staff and the Irish Tour Operators Association (ITOA). The request was that the brief would paint a full picture of the perceptions of Meath and suggestions for improvement. The industry’s opinion was sought to ensure a ‘bottoms up’ approach was adopted. The objective was to ensure that no opinion was left unheard.

One of the main tasks for Meath Tourism ltd. coming out of the strategy is to attract new products and investors in tourism into the County. Adopting product development as a key role for Meath Tourism involved a major restructuring of the organisation towards the end of 2004. As much as 50% of the role of the organisation is to attract new investors in tourism to the County. Co. Meath attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors each year to visit some of its world renowned heritage sites. The recommendation by Welcome Marketing to position Co. Meath as Ireland’s Heritage Capital was made and one which is very important given the abundance of heritage in the County. Co. Meath is host to a heritage trail which includes some of the World’s best known heritage sites – Bru na Boinne, The Battle of the Boyne, Hill of Tara, Loughcrew Cairns, Trim Castle, Bective Abbey, The Kells Crosses and St. Columcille’s House.
