Located in a new development in the centre of Johnstown village, just five minutes' drive from Navan, this popular and fashionable gastro-pub is in the same ownership as Franzini O'Briens Restaurant in Trim, and worth a visit.
Wood-panelling, red brick walls and candles on the tables combine to create a modern rustic feel, and the international-style menu has broad appeal, with starters like duck spring rolls, pan-fried black pudding and prawn wontons all well under €10, and main dishes including pizzas, pastas burgers and chicken dishes under €20, although fresh fish may rise a little above this level.
There are tasty vegetarian choices too, including good salads, also appealing side dishes (eg stringy onions, spring onion mash and homemade fries) and a nice dessert menu a light tangy ginger and honeycomb pudding, for example, with créme anglaise.
Service is friendly and efficient, and a well-priced wine list offers a balanced range including a house champagne, two dessert wines and some decent wines by the glass. The weekday Early Bird dinner offers particularly good value.
Children welcome until 9pm; Toilets wheelchair accessible. Seats 110 (private room, 60); reservations not necessary; D Mon-Sat 5-10pm; Sun 1-9; Early D about €20, 5.30-7.30; also a la carte and vegetarian menu; SC 10%. Closed Good Fri, 25 Dec. Amex, Diners, MasterCard, Visa, Laser.
