Today our walled towns are recognised as important national heritage assets. They provide a connection between current communities and the townspeople of the past, while shaping the current and future form and fabric of our modern towns. When effectively conserved, managed and promoted, surviving walls or their former circuits contribute to a unique sense of place, belonging and identity. They are an important long-term source of civic pride and a focus for tourism and cultural and economic development. Conservation and management of historic walls contributes to an enhanced quality of life and wellbeing for residents and visitors alike, so they should be treasured long into the future.
