John Hume was a highly-respected politician who was a founder member of the SDLP (Social Democratic and Labour Party). He also served as an MP and an MEP. He was a co-recipient, with David Trimble, of the 1998 Nobel Peace Prize for his tireless work in bringing peace to Northern Ireland. This achievement earned him world-wide recognition for his courage and his belief in the power and value of democracy.

An Cathaoirleach, Cllr. David Gilroy, has said that ‘John Hume devoted his life to bringing peace to Northern Ireland and will be remembered for his energy, his principles and his humanity.’
