The Scheme…

Plans for the pedestrianisation of Trimgate Street are currently being finalised for a statutory public consultation process to be held in the coming weeks. This is a core part of the Council’s wider plan to revitalise and rejuvenate Navan town centre, which was first announced in 2017 as part of Navan 2030.

Trimgate Street is at heart of the retail/commercial quarter of Navan, and the plan will create a highly pedestrian focused street which promotes urban health, incorporating high quality pavements, street furniture and complementary landscaped areas. It will make the street much more vibrant, attractive, and a safer and more inclusive environment for pedestrians of all ages and abilities.

It will further deliver the overall objective of improved pedestrian access and movement in and out of the town centre, whilst reflecting an increased focus at a national level on the utilisation of more sustainable and active choices for travel.

The wider plan (Navan 2030) is designed to meet the current and future needs of the ever-expanding population of Navan, which is predicted to increase to almost 60,000 by 2050. The ambition is to shift from the traditional approach of planning for volumes of vehicles, which typically results in places dominated by cars, to planning for pedestrians  with the aim of creating and delivering better places for people.

Already, significant improvements have been made to areas of the town centre including Railway Street, Abbey Road, Ludlow and Bridge Street, Market Square, Kennedy Road and Kennedy Plaza, and with upgrade works currently taking place at Fairgreen, Church Hill and the laneways. Significant upgrades have also been made to the public transport network in the town centre, as work continues to make Navan a better place to live, work, visit, and be proud of.

Delivering the Scheme…

Following planning consent, works could begin in early 2026 and be substantially completed early in 2027. It is intended that construction works would be phased and managed in a manner that minimises, as far as reasonably practicable, levels of inconvenience and disruption to both the public and business in Navan.
