It is with deep regret that we have learned of the death of former Taoiseach and Meath TD, John Bruton RIP.

Speaking about his passing Cathaoirleach Cllr. Tommy Reilly said “It was with great sadness that I heard of the passing of John Bruton earlier today. He served Ireland and Europe with great honour and distinction and leaves behind a huge political legacy. John Bruton was elected as a Meath TD when he was 22 years old in 1969. He later became the leader of Fine Gael in 1990 and served as Taoiseach from 1994 to 1997.  He then went on to become the EU's ambassador to the US from 2004 to 2009. Mr. Bruton will be remembered for his service to both Ireland and Europe.  My deepest condolences to his wife Finola, his children, grandchildren and wider family and friends at this sad time”

Chief Executive of Meath County Council, Kieran Kehoe said “I was truly saddened to learn of John Bruton’s passing this morning. He gave his life to public service both at home and abroad.  Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Finola and his family and friends at this sad time.”  A book of condolences has been opened at Buvinda House, Navan, Co.
