Meath County Council has secured over €110,000 for ten projects across the county under the Government’s Anti-Dumping Initiative for 2020.

Meath County Council got the go ahead for 10 new projects across the county which will see dumping cleaned up at 8 locations, awareness and prevention measures including signage and surveillance together with enhancement measures to create  attractive, welcoming areas for people to use and enjoy.

The areas which have received funding this year are Kilcarn Railway Walk in Navan, Ardnamullen, Drumconrath, Emlagh Bog, Cross Carrick Kells, Crossakiel, Maudlin Vale Trim and Nobber.

Bernadine Carry, from Meath County Council Environment Section said, ‘The projects will begin in the coming weeks and will be completed by October. There will be an opportunity for local communities to become involved in some of these areas, in line with health and safety and Covid-19 restrictions.  The bigger role in terms of the community action will be on-going vigilance to ensure the dumping does not re-occur.’

Bernadine continued ‘Illegal Dumping has always been an issue across the county, the lockdown has added to the difficulty but we hope these measures together with the upcoming National Spring Clean will assist in the fight back against dumping’.

The council also received funding to upgrade technology towards detection of dumping and littering offences. Funding has also be assigned to the continuity of the Bikes for Africa project in conjunction with Rotary Navan, which will see 400 refurbished bikes sent out to Africa for use as school transport for students in The Gambia.
