Background
Since 24 February 2022, the Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth has worked to accommodate an unprecedented volume of persons seeking refuge from the invasion of Ukraine, amounting to over 104,600 people. As of 23rd February 2024, there are almost 73.4k Ukrainians currently accommodated in state accommodation, of which 55.2k are within serviced accommodation.
Currently, there are 1,791 Ukrainian BOTPs in state-provided accommodation in County Meath.
While fluctuating these numbers are showing no clear signs of significant reduction in the foreseeable future. In light of these ongoing pressures and in recognising the existing and future numbers of Ukrainian BOTPs, the Government continue with a substantial programme of work in the provision of accommodation. The refurbishment programme is playing an integral role in the provision of self-catering accommodation, while at the same time breathing new life into older vacant/derelict commercial properties.
Notes:
- Local Authority Integration Teams (LAIT)
A new local integration model was developed in collaboration with the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage (DHLGH), the County and City Management Association (CCMA) and the Local Government Management Agency (LGMA). The model is underpinned by the principle of ‘Integration from Day One’, and its overarching aim is to empower individuals to ultimately live independently in the community.
The role of the LAIT includes providing information, advice and guidance to individuals; linking individuals with mainstream and NGO services; and identifying gaps in supports or services.
- Legislation – EU Temporary Protection Directive (TPD, Council Directive 2001/15/EC)
The EU Temporary Protection Directive was activated by the EU Council in March 2022, following the invasion of Ukraine by Russia.
