How Rents are Calculated

Local Authority rents are based on a system called the "Differential Rents Scheme". This means that your weekly rent is based on the total household income in a manner which ensures that the amount charged is reasonable and does not lead to undue financial difficulties. The income of all members of your household will be added to the rent calculation and there may be deductions for any children in your family. Each local authority operates its own rent scheme.

If there are any changes in your household, or in the income of any household member, you must contact the Rents Department immediately, so that a new rent assessment can be carried out.

Rent Arrears

If you are experiencing difficulties with your rent, contact the Rents Department immediately and discuss how best to tackle the problem.  The staff with be able to talk with you, carry out a new rent assessment if required, and make an agreed plan for paying rent and any arrears which you may have on your account.

If you refuse to come to a reasonable agreement, or if you do not keep to the agreed plan, the Council will serve a Tenancy Warning, and may proceed to take you to Court, seeking to evict you and take the house back for re-allocation to someone on our waiting list.
