Licences for Signage, Outdoor Dining, Scaffolding, Hoarding & Skips

Licences for signage to Business Premises, Tourist Attractions & Facilities, Community Text Alert signage, Outdoor Dining, Scaffolding, Hoarding & Skips on public roads.

Applications are under Section 254 of the Planning & Development Act, 2000.

Signage

Local Events Signage

In October 2015, Meath County Council adopted a Temporary / Event Signage Policy as part of the Litter Management Plan

  • Under this policy all charitable and sporting organisations who wish to use signage to promote an event are obliged to apply to Meath County Council Environment Section for permission.
  • Signs cannot be erected in middle of towns, can only be on roads into and out of towns.
  • Signs can only go up 3 weeks before and must be down 3 days after. 
  • There is no application fee but Litter fines will issue if no permission has been given or signage is outside permitted dates.
  • Signs cannot hinder visibility of road users and cannot be glued or stuck to any other structure.

Applications for signage for local events are dealt with by the Environment Department.

Commercial Signage

Commercial signage on roadside is not allowed and is an offence under S19 of the Litter Pollution Act 1997 and will be subject to prosecution.  Anyone wishing to advertise their business should do so by traditional media methods, and/or use social media. 

Directional / Fingerpost Signage, Tourist Attraction Signage and Community Alert Signage

A business wishing to apply for Directional Fingerpost Signage should contact Transportation Department, Meath County Council, Buvinda House, Dublin Road, Navan, Co. Meath C15 Y291 or at transport@meathcoco.ie

Applications for Community Text Alert signs should be made using the following form. Signs and poles must comply with all relevant standards and be in accordance with Muintir na Tire Guidelines.

Signs / Advertisements on roadside behind walls

Signs / Advertisements on roadside behind walls is a matter for the Planning Department, as is permanent signage on lands, e.g. a large hoarding that becomes a structure on a site / change of shop name to front of a shop.  Any such signage erected without permission may be subject to prosecution by the Planning Department.

Outdoor Dining

Section 254 licence applications for Outdoor Dining are not subject to fees for 2023.  Applications should be made using the following form and returning the completed form to Transportation Department, Meath County Council, Buvinda House, Dublin Road, Navan, Co. Meath, C15 Y291 or by email to transport@meathcoco.ie along with the additional required information listed on the form

Skips

Skip licence applications should be made by completing the following form and returning it to the Transportation Department, Meath County Council, Buvinda House, Dublin Road, Navan, Co. Meath C15 Y291 or by email to transport@meathcoco.ie with 4 working days notice.

Please note that no fee will be requested until the application is approved in principal.

A skip licence fee is currently €30 per parking space per day.

Scaffolding, Hoarding, Appliance, Street Furnishing, Street Removable Signage or any other Structure

Section 254 licence applications for:

  • Scaffolding
  • Hoarding
  • Appliance
  • Street removable signage
  • Street furniture (not used for outdoor dining)
  • Any other structure to be placed on public road/footpath

should be made by completing the following form and returning it along with the relevant  documentation outlined on the form to the Transportation Department, Meath County Council, Buvinda House, Dublin Road, Navan, Co. Meath, C15 Y291 or by email to transport@meathcoco.ie

The appropriate fee will be requested when your application is approved in principle.
