Dunboyne and Clonee Pedestrian and Cycle Network

Meath County Council’s Active Travel Section wishes to provide the following update on the Dunboyne and Clonee Active Travel Schemes. As previously outlined, the overall network has been divided into two distinct projects for delivery purposes.

Dunboyne and Clonee Pedestrian and Cycle Network

Project 1: Dunboyne to Clonee Active Travel Links

This project comprises the routes shown in purple on the enclosed map.

  • On road route, approximately 3.2 km in length, extends north from the Rooske Road at the bridge over the Castle Stream to the Rooske Road junction with the L2228 in Dunboyne. It then continues eastwards through the Loughsallagh Roundabout and Clonee village to the Meath–Fingal County boundary east of Clonee village.
  • Greenway route, consist of a 3-metre-wide Greenway along the southern bank of the Castle Stream between Dunboyne and Clonee.

Both routes received Part 8 planning permission in January 2026. Meath County Council is currently in the process of appointing a consultant engineer to complete the detailed design. It is anticipated that the works will be delivered through a series of consecutive construction contracts.

The first construction phase is expected to run from the Fingal County boundary through Clonee Main Street to Loughsallagh. Subsequent phases will provide new active travel infrastructure extending to the Rooske Road in Dunboyne.

Project 2: Dunboyne Active Travel Network

The second project consists of the routes shown in orange on the enclosed map. Preliminary design work has commenced, and it is intended that a Part 8 planning application for these routes will be submitted in late 2026.

The routes proposed for inclusion in this Part 8 application are as follows:

  • Navan Road – Provision of segregated pedestrian and cycle facilities northwards from the SuperValu junction to the new access road serving the residential development at Pace.
  • Mill Farm to Old Fairgreen – Shared surface for pedestrians and cyclists connecting Station Road and Navan Road.
  • Castle Stream Greenway – 3-metre-wide greenway along the Castle Stream from the Summerhill Road Roundabout to the railway line, including links to Garnett Hall, Larchfield, and a bridge crossing over the railway line.
  • Summerhill Road – A 3-metre-wide shared surface for pedestrians and cyclists extending to the Dunboyne soccer grounds.
  • R157 Bypass – Provision of a Greenway along the bypass embankment.
  • Rooske Road – Segregated pedestrian and cycle facilities from the Castle Stream bridge to Chestnut Grove.
