Meath County Council is delighted to announce the launch of the Meath Sports Bursary Scheme 2026, designed to support talented local athletes competing at national and international levels.

With an initial allocation of €5,000, the scheme aims to assist aspiring sportspeople with the costs of training, coaching, travel, education, and equipment, helping them reach their full potential and represent County Meath on a wider stage.

The bursary is open to amateur athletes from all sports recognised by Sport Ireland who demonstrate strong performance, commitment, and future potential.

Applications are now open until Thursday, 16 July at 12pm.

Cathaoirleach Cllr Wayne Harding welcomed the initiative, stating: “This bursary scheme represents a meaningful investment in our talented athletes across County Meath. It will help support their development and ensure they can continue to compete and excel at the highest levels.”

Cllr Sharon Tolan, who originally proposed the motion, said: “I am delighted to see this scheme come to fruition. It is important that we recognise and support the dedication and commitment of our athletes, who are representing Meath with pride both nationally and internationally.”

Cllr Ronan Moore, Chair of the Community, Cultural Development and Gaeltacht Affairs SPC, added: “The SPC was pleased to oversee the development of this scheme, ensuring it is fair, transparent and focused on supporting athletes with real potential. This initiative aligns with our broader commitment to community development and participation in sport.”

Barry Lynch, Director of Services, added: “This scheme reflects the Council’s commitment to supporting sporting excellence and providing practical assistance to athletes striving to achieve their full potential.”
